Dr. Gerald L. Grotta has been involved with community newspapers for more than half a century, starting as a Linotype operator and printer for weekly newspapers. He has been a reporter, editor, photographer, columnist, editorial writer, and page designer for weekly and daily newspapers in North Dakota, South Dakota, Idaho and Illinois. For the past 30 years he has been involved in newspaper and magazine research, including projects for the Wall Street Journal, Sports Illustrated, New West, Redbook, New York Post, Minneapolis Star & Tribune, Rolling Stone and many other national publications. He also has done research and consulting projects for many community newspapers throughout the country. He has been keynote speaker for international newspaper programs in Denmark and Finland as well as in the United States and has presented more than 20 programs for the American Press Institute on various topics.

Jerry has taught at Idaho State University, Southern Illinois University, the University of Oklahoma and Texas Christian University. He “retired” from TCU in 2000, but continues to teach courses in research in the Schieffer School of Journalism.
